Organizer

Based in Bay Area, Northern CA

The Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO & CLC is a democratic labor union representing more than 8,000 workers throughout California. The Local is headquartered in Oakland and has an experienced and united Executive Board. ESC Local 20 members are highly skilled professionals employed principally at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (“PG&E”), Kaiser Permanente, private and public health care facilities, local and federal government agencies, and legal non-profits.

ESC Local 20 seeks to hire an experienced Organizer . This individual will work closely with the elected leadership and the Executive Director and Organizing Director in creating and executing campaigns to build membership and union power. ESC Local 20 is looking for candidates who have at least three (3) years of experience in external organizing campaigns, preferably with technical and professional workers.

Duties include:

• organizing non-union workplaces to join the union
• creating and working with organizing committees
• supporting ESC’s goals and organizing targets
• internal organizing and contract campaign support
• As assigned;
  • contract negotiations and campaigns
  • providing support for ongoing labor-management structures
  • grievance administration and contract enforcement
  • member development and training

Compensation is highly competitive, and step placement is dependent on experience and qualifications. Initial salary range is $118,206.40-142,979.20 depending on experience. Outstanding benefits package includes 100% employer-paid family medical and prescription coverage. ESC provides a 401K/Pension employer contribution of 21% of the annual base salary. The position has generous time-off benefits that include vacation and compensatory time off provisions.

Desired qualifications:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• A team player who possesses the ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds
• Ability to think strategically and exercise a high degree of judgment
• Understanding of technical details in complex contract review and enforcement  
• Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years of experience with organizing campaigns

Requirements:
The Organizer/Union Representative will be based out of the ESC Local 20 office in Oakland. The job will require travel as part of representation and organizing drives. Work can include long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. A valid Driver’s License and proof of adequate personal insurance is defined as at least $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$100,000 property coverage. Willing to complete a background check.
